Constructorul american de mașini autonome Waymo solicită autorităților să modifice legislația rutieră, astfel încât volanul și pedalele să nu mai fie considerate componente esențiale ale unei mașini. Dacă schimbarea nu este efectuată prompt, reprezentanții Waymo avertizează că întreaga industrie auto va avea de suferit.
Într-un mesaj public adresat Administrației americane pentru Siguranța Traficului Rutier (NHTSA), Waymo cere ca legislația să fie actualizată, pentru a ține pasul cu dezvoltarea continuă a segmentului vehiculelor autonome.

În momentul de față, constructorii de mașini autonome trebuie să îndeplinească peste 70 de cerințe din domeniul siguranței rutiere pentru a-și putea comercializa vehiculele în SUA. Potrivit Waymo, multe dintre aceste standarde pornesc de la premisa că un șofer se află în spatele volanului, pregătit să calce frâna sau să vireze, în caz că sistemul de conducere autonom comite vreo eroare. Oficialii companiei consideră că această premisă trebuie eliminată, că volanul și pedalele nu trebuie să fie obligatorii în dotarea unui vehicul autonom.
„NHTSA ar trebui să acționeze prompt în sensul eliminării barierelor, asigurând în același timp siguranța. […] NHTSA ar trebui mai întâi să se ocupe de acele standarde de siguranță care presupun că un om este în spatele volanului, înainte de a revizui regulile de amplasare a scaunelor auto‘, scriu reprezentanții Waymo.
Această modificare legislativă ar permite constructorilor să dezvolte în timp util mașini fără control manual, adică fără volan sau pedale. În caz contrar, cei de la Waymo avertizează că acest segment al industriei auto riscă să stagneze.
