La capitolul experimente automobilistice, credeam că le-am văzut pe toate prin prisma fenomenului de personalizare numit tuning. Însă rușii de la Garage 54 nu adresează (doar) provocări de ordin estetic, ci și funcțional. Oarecum. Într-un clip anterior au „îmbrăcat’ o autoutilitară în ciment doar ca să verifice dacă astfel devine mai rezistentă.
Experimentul pe care îl vedem în clipul de mai jos nu este atât de distructiv, cu toate că are efecte negative puternice asupra direcției mașinii. Dar, așa cum ne-au explicat protagoniștii, acesta nu este un rezultat direct al exercițiului creativ, ci un efect secundar cauzat de o eroare de calcul.
Băieții de la Garage 54 s-au întrebat aici dacă poți să-ți confecționezi jante din plexiglas, un material termoplastic. Acesta este transparent ca sticla, însă nu dispune de aceleași proprietăți casante, ceea ce îl face mai rezistent la forțe. Pentru acest experiment, au folosit plăci de 20 de milimetri grosime.
Rezultatul poate fi catalogat ca impresionant, mai ales dacă îl privim în ansamblu, adică împreună cu mașina-tester, în cazul acesta un Mercedes-Benz 190 E. Din păcate, nu l-am văzut testat așa cum ne-am fi dorit, din cauză că mașina… nu mai poate vira.
Această ingeniozitate estetică nu este neapărat nouă: în 2011, West Coast Customs (atelierul de tuning care a găzduit emisiunea Pimp My Ride) a finalizat un R8 inspirat de filmul Tron, care purta un set similar de jante. Nu știm dacă erau fabricate din același material – există și alternative mai rezistente, implicit mai scumpe la plexiglas – însă cert este că soluția tehnică este valabilă.
